Arvin's People
The People Who Have Kept Bob's Legacy Alive
Dave Kuhn
Dave Kuhn was on the Brigade Staff with Bob Arvin at West Point in 1964-65. Kuhn was the Executive Officer on the staff and he and Bob roomed together their senior or “Firstie” year at West Point. Mr. Kuhn was the driving force behind the campaign to have the Cadet Development and Training Center dedicated as “The Arvin Cadet Development and Training Center” at West Point.
Chuck Moseley
Chuck Moseley was Bob’s best friend during and after his years at West Point. The two roomed together and they were close friend all those years. During the Redondo match at West Point in the Summer of 1962, Bob and Chuck were the last two men standing in a hand-to-hand combat match that pitted about 700 cadets against each other. Although Bob got the best of Chuck that day, it was mighty close! Chuck has been part of Bob’s legacy for over a half a century.
Tino Lambros
Tino Lambros was a wrestling teammate of Bob’s at Ypsilanti High School in 1960-61. Like Arvin, Tino was a State Championship wrester and went on to become an All-American at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Lambros has been instrumental in keeping Bob’s spirit alive by helping to form the Captain C. Robert Arvin Foundation Awards for Excellence in 2003. Over 110 students have been awarded the Arvin Award over the years, and Tino Lambros was it’s original Chairman
Merry Lynn Arvin Brondos
Merry Lynn married Bob Arvin in June of 1966. They knew of each other as children and began dating during their years at Ypsilanti High School. Merry Lynn enrolled at Duke University in 1961 and later was a graduate of The University of Michigan. She was a teacher for many years and now resides in Florida. She as been an inspiration for the film “Where the Brave Dare to Tread- The Bob Arvin Story” sharing both fun and very painful memories of their very short time together after she and Bob were married.
Dave Arvin
David Arvin is Bob’s only brother and they grew up together in Ypsilanti in the 1950’s and 1960’s, David was wrestler and football player for the Ypsilanti Braves and attended Eastern Michigan University and did his graduate work at the University of North Carolina. He spent over 30 years as an educator in the Clio School system as Director of Education.
Fred Laughlin
Fred Laughlin was a classmate of Bob’s at West Point, Class of 1965. Fred and Bob were close friends their last two years at West Point and after their years up on the Hudson River, they attended Ranger training together at Fort Benning, and were deployed in Vietnam about the same time. Fred and Bob kept in written contact in 1967, and were set to meet up in Vietnam in October of that year when Bob was killed in action. Fred has been a driving force behind the legacy of his friend Bob Arvin all these years.
Tom Abraham
Tom was one of Bob’s close pals at West Point in the class of 1965. They were both Champion wrestlers, and close confidants. Tom has honored Bob over the years by presenting the Arvin Award which goes to graduating senior at West Point who best exemplifies the qualities of scholarship, leadership, and commitment to Army wrestling. Tom’s insight to the Bob Arvin story has been invaluable.
Walter Oehrlein
Walter Oehrlein was a classmate of Bob’s at West Point and they both graduated with the class of 1965. Walter is the only individual national champion in the history of Army’s Squash program. He was a two-sport star at the Academy earning three varsity letters each in Squash and Tennis. While Bob and Walter knew each other at the Academy, it was in later years that Walter has become a tireless supporter of Arvin’s legacy. Walter has been a significant force behind the scenes during the production of the film, “Where the Brave Dare to Tread- The Bob Arvin Story.”
Bill Nickels
ill is a longtime resident of Ypsilanti, Michigan. He has been a City Council member as well as a board member for the Ypsilanti Historical Museum. Bill has authored in my opinion, the definitive concise biography of Bob Arvin, and it was published in the Ypsilanti Gleanings periodical in the summer of 2012. It’s an absolute must read, and it should be posted here on BobArvin.org soon. Bill’s tireless research was an inspiration for me to make the documentary, “Where The Brave Dare to Tread- The Bob Arvin Story.”
Brian Kruger
Brian is an Ypsilanti native who, like Bob, was an Ypsilanti Brave, and also taught at the high school in the 1980s. Kruger produced and directed the film, “Where the Brave Dare to Tread- The Bob Arvin Story” and has spearheaded an effort to have the film available to for all the public libraries and high schools in the State of Michigan. He also authored and maintains this website.
